How Much Heat Does a Bioethanol Fireplace Give? Real Numbers for Real Rooms

Pe scurt

A bioethanol fireplace gives real heat: typically 2 to 4 kW, comparable to a small radiator, and because there is no chimney, all of it stays in the room. That is enough to noticeably warm a living room of 20 to 40 square metres, at a fuel cost of roughly 1 to 2 EUR per hour at full flame. Heat depends on burner size and flame setting, not on the brand; a closed BEV burner converts fuel more completely than an open tray of the same size.

Key takeaways

  • Typical output is 2 to 4 kW per device; large built-in burners reach more, tabletop models under 1 kW.
  • No chimney means no heat loss: 100 percent of the energy from the fuel stays in the room, unlike a wood fireplace where most goes up the flue.
  • Rule of thumb: 1 kW warms about 10 square metres of an insulated room by a few degrees; a 3 kW fireplace is a comfortable supplement for a 30 square metre living room.
  • Running cost at full flame is about 1 to 2 EUR per hour; at half flame roughly half.

"Does it actually heat?" is the first question people ask about a bioethanol fireplace, usually because they have seen a decorative model with a tiny flame. The honest answer is: it heats like a small radiator, and how much depends on the size of the burner and the flame setting. This guide gives the numbers, shows what they mean for a real room and explains where the differences between devices come from.

How much heat does a bioethanol fireplace produce?

Bioethanol contains about 6 kWh of energy per litre. A fireplace that burns 0.3 to 0.6 litres per hour therefore releases roughly 2 to 4 kW of heat, which is the range of most freestanding and built-in bioethanol fireplaces. Tabletop models with a small bowl burner use far less fuel and give under 1 kW: pleasant for the hands, not for the room. Large linear burners installed in walls or media walls can reach 5 kW and more.

For comparison, a typical electric fan heater is 2 kW, a standard living room radiator 1 to 2 kW, and a wood-burning stove 5 to 8 kW nominal, of which a large share leaves through the chimney.

Why all of the heat stays in the room

A wood or gas fireplace with a flue sends hot exhaust gases up the chimney, and with them most of the energy. A bioethanol fireplace has no chimney: the fuel burns cleanly into heat, water vapour and a small amount of CO2, comparable to a few candles, and everything is released directly into the room. That is why a 3 kW bioethanol device can feel warmer than a much larger wood fireplace in the same space.

How many square metres does it warm?

As a rule of thumb for an insulated room with standard ceilings, 1 kW raises the temperature of about 10 square metres by a few degrees. In practice:

Device Heat output Comfortable as a supplement for Example
Tabletop fireplace under 1 kW the table, not the room tabletop models
Freestanding bioethanol fireplace 2 to 3 kW 20 to 30 m² living room or bedroom Arcticon, Vertis
Large freestanding or built-in burner 3 to 4 kW 30 to 40 m² open-plan space built-in inserts
Outdoor BEV fireplace 3 to 4 kW radiant seating area for 4 to 6 people Faro

"Supplement" is the right word: a bioethanol fireplace is not designed to be the only heat source in a house. It takes the chill off a room in spring and autumn, warms the sofa zone in winter and replaces switching on the central heating for one evening.

What decides how much heat you get

1. Burner size

The longer the flame line and the larger the fuel surface, the more fuel burns per hour and the more heat you get. This is why a 40 cm linear burner heats more than a round tabletop bowl regardless of brand.

2. Flame setting

Adjustable devices let you choose between a low flame for atmosphere and a high flame for heat. At half flame, heat output and fuel consumption both drop by roughly half, and burn time per litre doubles.

3. Open tray or closed BEV burner

In a classic open-tray burner the liquid ethanol burns at its surface; some fuel evaporates without burning, which you notice as a faint smell and slightly lower heat per litre. Planika's BEV (Burning Ethanol Vapours) devices heat the fuel inside a closed tank and burn only its vapours: the combustion is more complete, the flame is steadier and there is no odour. The difference in heat per litre is modest, the difference in comfort and safety is large.

4. Fuel quality

Fireplace-grade bioethanol such as Fanola is about 95 to 96 percent ethanol. Cheaper fuels are diluted with water, which lowers the flame, the heat and the burn time. More on this in our bioethanol fuel guide.

What does the heat cost?

With fuel at roughly 4 to 6 EUR per litre in economy packs, one hour at full flame (about 0.4 litres for a 2.5 kW device) costs 1.5 to 2.5 EUR; at a medium flame about 1 EUR. There is no standing charge, no chimney sweep and no service contract, so the price per hour is the whole cost. Compared with electricity, 2.5 kW of electric heating for an hour costs about 0.6 to 1 EUR at European prices, so bioethanol heat is more expensive per kWh, but it comes with a real flame and zero installation.

Ventilation and safety with a heating fireplace

A bioethanol fireplace uses oxygen from the room like a gas hob. In a normally ventilated room this is not a problem; for long evenings at full flame open a window for a minute every hour or two. Automatic BEV devices monitor temperature and shut down if the device overheats or tilts; with manual burners, never refill a warm device and keep textiles away from the flame.

FAQ

Can a bioethanol fireplace heat a whole house?

No. It is a room heater and a mood light in one, delivering 2 to 4 kW to the room it stands in.

Is 3 kW a lot?

It is about the output of a large panel radiator. In a 25 square metre insulated living room you will feel the difference within 20 to 30 minutes.

Does the heat go up like with a wood fireplace?

Warm air rises in every room, but nothing escapes through a chimney, so the heat stays in the space instead of leaving the house.

Which Planika fireplace gives the most heat?

Built-in BEV burners and large freestanding models such as Arcticon give the most; tabletop models are for atmosphere. Write to planika@planika.com with your room size and we will recommend a model.

Planika has designed and manufactured bioethanol fireplaces in Bydgoszcz, Poland since 2001. The heat figures above come from our own product testing and the energy content of bioethanol; individual models are listed with their consumption on the product pages.
